11 Artist Corps New Orleans Fellows in 12 public schools have taught over 2,500 students in more than 12,000 music classes.
Our Roots in Service
Artist Corps New Orleans was formed in 2009 as part of MusicianCorps, a movement to engage musicians in service to communities across the country. A 25-member local Task Force considered the question, "If we wanted to provide a way for musicians to engage in service in New Orleans, where would they be most needed, and most effective?" When we realized that less than 20% of K-6 public schools had music programs, we created a model to engage artists in service by embedding accomplished musicians as full-time teachers in public elementary schools.
From 2009-2014, each Artist Corps New Orleans Fellow undertook a 2-year service commitment, and was provided a living stipend, health insurance, and rigorous, ongoing pedagogic training and coaching. Placement schools agreed to work closely with the program to support the Fellows and expand their talents as highly effective educators – and to hire them after the fellowship, supporting the music program long-term.
Alumni of the Artist Corps New Orleans Fellows Program continue to receive ongoing support and professional development, becoming partners in artist outreach and service in their current schools. They bring their artistry to bear in the classroom, and are equipped with the skills to deliver sequential, age-appropriate instruction. Students learn the language of music – how to read it, write it, and discern the finer details of composition and performance. Alums are invested in their students and our community, strengthening the cultural economy and ensuring the legacy of music in our city.
Today we estimate that close to 60% of public elementary schools have music programs, but without a centralized school system, music educators in those schools have little content-specific support and development. Artist Corps New Orleans has shifted its mission accordingly, becoming a service organization to strengthen music education. We engage artists in service in schools; collect and share data on music education; and empower music educators with the tools they need to be highly effective in their classrooms.
